This is a historical town , the birth place of Maanicka Vasagar one of the four great pillars of Saivaism. Maanicka Vasagar was also called as Vaatha oorar as he was born here in thiru Vaatha oor (town of devine dicourse) . Maanicka Vaasagar was serving as minister in Pandia Kingdom , once the KIng gave Manicka vasagar huge ransom to purchase one thousand Arabian horses, but with that fund He built a huge temple in his town thiruvaathaoor, knowing this, King called him , Maanicka vasagar prayed to Shiva , Shiva with his blessings made 1000 wolfs to horses which was sent to Kings palace , by next morning all the wolves let palace making a huge sound, after that Maanicka Vasagar become a saint and he wrote Thiruvaasagam one of the 12 thirumuraigal (12 holy books of Saivaism
